Background of the Study

Investigative journalism plays a critical role in exposing corruption, holding power to account, and promoting transparency in governance. However, the practice of investigative journalism is often constrained by media laws, regulations, and legal pressures. In Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, the impact of national and local media laws on investigative journalism has become a subject of growing concern. While media laws are designed to protect journalists’ rights and ensure a free press, they can also impose restrictions on investigative practices, particularly in sensitive areas such as government corruption, corporate malpractice, and human rights violations. These laws often result in challenges such as censorship, self-censorship, legal threats, and limitations on the flow of information. This study examines how media laws in Jos South influence investigative journalism, focusing on the tension between journalistic freedom and legal constraints (Abubakar & Ibrahim, 2024; Musa & Okoro, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Jos South, investigative journalists often face legal barriers that inhibit their ability to report on sensitive issues, such as corruption and human rights abuses. Despite existing media laws that protect journalistic freedom, there are numerous instances where journalists are subjected to legal action, threats, or harassment as a result of their investigative work. These legal challenges undermine the public’s right to access critical information and limit the capacity of the media to fulfill its watchdog role. The study aims to investigate the effects of media laws on the practice of investigative journalism in Jos South, exploring how these laws impact journalists' ability to uncover and report on corruption and other forms of malpractice (Ibrahim, 2023; Bello & Suleiman, 2024).
